Howrah Service to the Poor was founded by a man of faith, driven by a spirit of service and the conviction that the poorest have much to teach us. Our mission is to promote human dignity and the integral development of the most vulnerable through education, healthcare, and solidarity—guided by values of simplicity, availability, service, and community life.

We recognize the inherent dignity of every human being, regardless of caste, belief, social status, or religion. We aim to support the poorest and people with disabilities, for they are precious in the eyes of God, and we believe that everyone has the right to a place in society. By giving them access to education, healthcare, training, and safety, we strive to restore hope and offer the possibility of a better future.

We believe it is essential for our teams to be present in the field and remain close to the poorest. As Father Laborde used to say: “We must go to the poorest, for they will not come to us.” Every staff member maintains direct contact with the poor and their families in order to stay rooted in the purpose of their work. Serving the poor and the most vulnerable is, for us, a way of serving God.

As a non-profit organization, HSP relies entirely on the generosity of its benefactors. Our wealth lies in everyone’s talents and in our desire to serve the poorest, but we also believe that through your generosity, God acts.
Complex and often misunderstood, poverty is unfortunately too often defined by stereotypes. At HSP, we want to help people understand what poverty is in India and to show where the country’s real emergencies lie.
